The organization of the international scientific-professional conference „The innovative, collaborative, inclusive development of cooperatives: theory, practice, perspectives” is dedicated to 150 years anniversary of cooperative movement in Moldova, the 100th anniversary of national cooperative education, the 25th anniversary since the establishment of Trade Co-operative University of Moldova.

The cooperatives have an important role in contemporary society due to the impact they have on the socio-economic development in any country. The cooperatives represent a dual model based on an economic and social component, becoming key actors in the social economy. Therefore the UN Resolution from 2001 "The cooperatives in the social development", Recommendation no. 193 of June 20, 2002 of the International Labor Organization concerning promotion of cooperatives, as well as European policies (European Commission Communication "Promotion of cooperative societies in Europe" from February 23, 2004; European Parliament resolution of July 2, 2013 regarding "The contribution of cooperatives to overcoming the crisis" are oriented towards the support of this form of activity and encourages governments, academia and researches to contribute to the development of cooperatives by improving legislation, identification and implementation of innovative forms of cooperatives and cooperative activities, promotion of education in this field, based on the principles and best international practices.

Due to the importance of cooperatives UN proclaimed 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives.

The cooperative's sector development is constantly growing. The cooperatives associate about one billion members, every sixth inhabitant of the Earth is a member of one or another type of cooperative. According to International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) in the activity of cooperatives are involved about 250 million of employees. In the framework of G20 countries the number of persons that activate in cooperatives constitute 12% of all employees.

The cooperatives are becoming increasingly important in the European Union, where there are about 176 000 cooperative enterprises owned by 141 million members. The Europe cooperative provides jobs for 4.7 million people and contributes on average about 5% to the GDP of each member state.

Cooperatives rests with a distinct role in the achievement of national economic and social policies, the capitalizing of priorities/objectives of the National Development Strategy "Moldova 2020: 7 solutions for economic growth and poverty reduction"; other policy documents.

In Moldova are registered 3803 cooperatives (at 01/01/2018), which constitute 2.2% of the total number of economic agents registered in the country. The relevant segment is that of consumer cooperatives. The development of cooperatives in the country score a slower pace in relation to the progress made at the international level and the European level, in particular. In this context, promoting the development of cooperatives has become imperative having regard to the contribution they can make changes in society, achievement of economic and social policies of the country development.

Within the conference will be put into debate aspects which aimed the current situation and the development trends of cooperatives in Moldova and internationally, the challenges faced by this sector; will be identified solutions for the innovative, collaborative, inclusive cooperatives development according to the modern strategies, concepts, and international, especially European good practices. In this regard, scientific forum will bring together on an effective platform public authorities, academia, business environment, young researchers and other stakeholders.

The impact of the Conference will have a lasting effect resulted in:

  • modernization and efficientisation of the cooperatives sector from the country through a continuous change process;
  • development of public-private-academic partnerships, in this field;
  • strengthening relations with higher education and research institutions from abroad, especially of European;
  • identification of new ideas and strategies for smart and sustainable development of cooperatives, which will ensure continuity of the processes of modernization of the cooperative activity in our country.
